Langmeier Backup 12: How to deduplicate the data backup

Efficient Deduplication of Backup Data with Langmeier Backup

For business users, deduplication of backup data is a crucial feature that significantly reduces the storage space required for backups. In this article, we will guide you step by step on how to implement deduplication for your backup data using Langmeier Backup.

Adding Deduplication as a Server Feature

To enable deduplication, you must add it as a server feature—typically via the Server Manager or, alternatively, through PowerShell. Deduplication depends on the File and Storage Services role. If this role is already installed, please expand its tree structure, where you will find the Data Deduplication option.

While installing the deduplication feature sets up the necessary prerequisites, activation occurs on a per-volume basis. You can enable deduplication either when creating new volumes or by configuring existing ones. Please note: if a drive already contains a large amount of data, reclaiming disk space may take some time.

Activating Deduplication for New Volumes

To set up a new volume, select File and Storage Services in the left navigation pane of the Server Manager, then navigate to Disks or Storage Pools. Here, you can create Volumes or Virtual Disks in the lower left window. The setup wizard provides a dedicated dialog for enabling and configuring deduplication.

Within this dialog, you can specify after how many days a new or modified file (measured by Last Modified) should be processed. The default value is 5 days, but you may set it to zero to apply deduplication regardless of file age. Additionally, the wizard allows you to exclude specific file types by their extension.

Time-Controlled Storage Optimization

Another useful setting is the ability to schedule deduplication tasks, either as a supplement or alternative to the background process. Scheduling deduplication is particularly beneficial if your server is heavily utilized during the day and the background process cannot access sufficient resources.

You can also access additional options via the Configure Deduplication command in the context menu of each volume. Here, you have the ability to exclude entire directories from deduplication or to deactivate deduplication for a volume. Please note: deactivating deduplication prevents future files from being processed, but files that have already been deduplicated will not be restored to their original state.

System Requirements for using deduplication:

  • Windows Server 2012 or later
  • NTFS partition

By following these steps, you can efficiently optimize your storage resources and ensure that your backup data is managed in a space-saving manner. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our support team.
