Guide: Restore with Langmeier Backup 15 (2026)

With the release of Langmeier Backup 15 (May 2026), the recovery process has been fundamentally simplified. Thanks to the new 64-bit recovery media (AMD64) and the integrated UEFI boot manager, it is no longer necessary to manually switch to "legacy mode" or deactivate "secure boot" on modern systems.

The modern standard: Native UEFI recovery

Unlike older versions, the Langmeier Backup 15 rescue medium starts directly in UEFI mode. This corresponds to the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and offers decisive advantages:

  1. Maximum security: "Secure Boot" can and should remain activated. Your system remains protected even during recovery.
  2. No data loss during booting: Since modern Windows installations (10/11) are based on GPT partitions, a native UEFI boot is the safest way to avoid bootloader errors after recovery.
  3. Hyper-V support: The media now boots natively in virtual environments of generation 2.

Step-by-step: How to start the recovery

To perform a restore on a current PC or notebook, follow these simple steps:

1. connect rescue media

Connect your bootable Langmeier Backup USB stick to a free USB port. 2.

2. call up the boot menu

Restart the computer. Press the boot menu key several times during the boot process (before the Windows logo appears).

Common keys for the boot menu (models 2020-2026):

Manufacturer Boot menu key
Lenovo / Acer F12 (or Fn + F12)
Dell F12
HP F9 or Esc
ASUS / MSI F8 or F11

Pro tip: Start the rescue medium directly from Windows

If Windows is still starting, you can save yourself the trouble of searching for the correct boot menu button.

Use this elegant method instead:

  • Click on the Start icon and the On/Off icon.
  • Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
  • Hold down the key and click on "Restart" at the same time.
  • The PC will now switch to a blue options menu. Select: "Use a device" and then "EFI USB Device" (or the name of your USB stick).
  • The system will then boot directly from the Langmeier Backup rescue medium without you having to quickly press a key during the boot process.

Select UEFI medium 3

Your USB flash drive will now be displayed directly in the boot menu. Select the entry marked with "UEFI:" (e.g. UEFI: USB Flash Drive 1.0). Confirm with Enter.

4 Automatic environment

The system now loads the Langmeier rescue environment in high-resolution 4K optics. The simple user interface recognizes your drives and backup images and guides you through the process.

Special cases and troubleshooting

If the medium is not recognized on very old hardware (before 2016), check the following points in the BIOS:

  • USB Boot: Make sure that "USB Boot" is set to Enabled.
  • Fast Boot: Deactivate "Fast Boot" in the BIOS if the USB stick is skipped during a cold start.
  • Outdated systems: Only for computers without UEFI support, "Legacy Support" must be activated in the BIOS. Langmeier Backup 15 continues to support these systems, but recommends the modern UEFI path.

New features in the version 15 rescue environment

  • AI support: The "Langly" assistant helps to identify the correct image files.
  • Driver injection: Automatic detection of modern NVMe SSDs and RAID controllers without manual driver searches.
  • Language diversity: The environment is now also available in Indonesian and optimized German (without Helvetisms).
