Microsoft fixes security vulnerability in volume shadow copy service
When utilizing backup solutions such as Langmeier Backup, which enable you to back up drives during active operation, it is essential that administrators verify the version of the operating system in use. Microsoft has addressed a critical bug in several Windows versions that could result in corrupted backups. The company has published a knowledge base article and released updates to resolve this issue in Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, and Windows Server 2008 R2. Under certain conditions, this bug could cause backups created with the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to become corrupted during operation. This error has already been fixed in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1. However, if you are using older versions, it is strongly recommended that you install the relevant updates as soon as possible. The issue typically occurs if a partition is larger than 8 GB and its size is an exact multiple of 8192 MB; extended partitions are also affected. As a result, individual files within the backup may be faulty. The provided Windows updates effectively resolve this problem. Urs Langmeier, Managing Director and developer of the Langmeier Backup solution, explains: “A backup can only be performed without errors if the system itself is running error-free. In cases of defective hard drives or unstable drivers, the backup solution receives incorrect data from the operating system and then saves this data as provided.” Consequently, the backup copy may contain unusable data. “Langmeier Backup can, of course, verify the data after the backup process. However, when used during active operation, data may have changed between the backup and the verification,” Langmeier adds. “Therefore, the results of the verification must be interpreted accordingly: Was this file still being edited and may therefore differ from the backup copy?” Urs Langmeier also strongly recommends that all users install the available updates for the software.
