Backing up data at remote locations is a growing challenge for SMEs and large companies. The increasing mobility of employees and the wide distribution of data within the company exacerbate the problem. The loss of mobile devices, for example, threatens the loss of valuable data. What is the most suitable data backup method?

In addition to backing up data to local storage media, backing up to a central computer is also an option. Cloud services can also be used to back up data located at remote sites.

Decentralized data backup enables local access, which reduces the time required to restore data. On the other hand, professional support for local backups is difficult given the limited number of IT specialists. The systematic execution of local data backups can hardly be guaranteed, especially with numerous local backup locations.

A centralized data backup is therefore preferable, in which a company's IT organization decides on the type, scope and timing of a data backup. Data can be copied and backed up several times a day. With this solution, IT specialists are only required at the location of the central computer, unless special IT problems occur at remote locations. Due to company-wide standardized technology, data restores are usually uncomplicated. However, a centralized backup system requires larger investments in software and hardware at the remote locations. If end devices are not active, data backups can also be delayed, resulting in a loss of efficiency.

However, remote data can also be backed up directly to a private or public cloud. An external copy of the data reduces the costs for IT specialists who would otherwise have to be available locally or centrally. "Hybrid" cloud services initially copy and store data locally before transferring it to the cloud after a certain period of time. Hybrid backups therefore enable local recovery - at least for a certain period of time - and thus combine the advantages of centralized and local data backup systems. However, cloud solutions are associated with a loss of control by the company transferring the data, making the selection of a reliable cloud provider particularly important.
