How to write an interesting newsletter

Newsletter Tips A newsletter should always surprise its readers.

Email newsletters are a familiar sight in every inbox, yet most of them go unread. This often happens when the fundamental principles of effective newsletters are ignored. In the following five points, we will show you why newsletters are frequently overlooked—and how you can avoid common mistakes.

If you do not have any newsworthy information to share, you should refrain from sending a newsletter. Ask yourself honestly: would you, as a customer, find the content of your email interesting? If the answer is no, it is better to skip the newsletter. Do not feel compelled to stick to a rigid publication schedule; instead, reach out to your customers only when you have truly valuable updates to communicate.

Keep it short and engaging: The introduction of your newsletter should immediately capture attention. Avoid generic statements and skip irrelevant small talk, such as comments about the weather. If you have exciting news about a breakthrough in your company, reveal it in the very first sentence.

Remember that we no longer live in the era of desktop-only computing. Your emails must remain readable on smartphones and tablets as well. Poor line breaks, oversized graphics that only display well on large screens, or fonts that are too small can quickly diminish your readers’ interest. Use available tools to preview how your email will appear on all relevant devices before sending it out.

Personalize your emails. If you send the same newsletter to customers from different industries, perhaps only 15% of recipients will feel addressed—while the remaining 85% will not find the content relevant. Strive to tailor your messages to each customer segment as much as possible, even if this requires additional effort.

Always define a clear focus for your newsletter. If you jump randomly between unrelated topics, your readers will lose track—and interest. Concentrate on one or two key subjects per issue; you can always cover other topics in future editions.

We hope you will read the next Langmeier Backup or aBusiness newsletter with interest. If you notice that we have violated any of the above rules, please let us know immediately!
