Backing up your data

Which type of backup is the best choice for my data?

When it comes to data protection, choosing the right backup method is essential. There are several types of backups, including full backup, incremental backup, differential backup, and mirror backup. Below, you will find an overview of each method to help you determine which best suits your needs.

1. Full Backup

A full backup—also known as a complete backup—creates a copy of all data on your system, regardless of whether the data has changed since the last backup. While full backups are straightforward to restore and provide comprehensive protection, they are time-consuming and require significant storage space.

2. Incremental Backup

An incremental backup only saves data that has changed or been added since the last backup, whether that was a full or another incremental backup. This approach is much faster and uses less storage space compared to full backups. However, to restore your data, you will need the most recent full backup as well as all subsequent incremental backups.

3. Differential Backup

A differential backup captures all data that has changed or been added since the last full backup. Unlike incremental backups, which only save changes since the previous backup, differential backups accumulate all changes since the last full backup. This method strikes a balance between speed and storage requirements. To restore your data, you will need the last full backup and the most recent differential backup.

4. Mirror Backup

A mirror backup—also referred to as an image backup or system image—creates an exact copy of your entire system, including the operating system, applications, and all data. This method allows for rapid and complete system recovery in the event of a failure. However, mirror backups require substantial storage space and can be time-intensive to create.
