Langmeier Backup FAQ
Difference between file backup and image backup?

File Backup

A file backup allows you to create a secure copy of your files and folders—or even entire drives—by individually copying each file to a backup medium. These files can be restored at any time, directly by you, without the need for additional software.

The backed-up files are organized in a dedicated folder on the backup device. One of the key advantages of a file backup is that the backup software automatically detects which files are new or have changed since the last backup. This means you do not have to manually search for updated files—the backup tool efficiently identifies and copies all modified or newly added files to the backup medium.

Image Backup

An image backup, on the other hand, creates a complete copy of an entire partition, capturing every bit and byte stored on that partition. This method is particularly effective for comprehensive system protection.

Image backups are typically faster when backing up entire partitions. During restoration, you can either recover the entire partition or mount the image as a virtual drive on your Windows workstation. This flexibility allows you to restore individual files and folders from the image backup as needed. Additionally, image backups are invaluable for reinstalling the operating system after a system crash. To do so, you must boot your PC using a bootable emergency medium.

An image backup is ideal for safeguarding the data of your entire computer, enabling you to quickly restore your system in the event of operating system issues. Even crashed servers can be brought back online in a short time using this method. However, if you have purchased a new computer, it is generally recommended to reinstall the operating system and your applications from the original installation media, rather than restoring from a previous image. Software downloaded from the internet can be freshly installed from the manufacturer’s website. This approach ensures you have a clean, unfragmented system that runs faster and is free from viruses and malware.

Conclusion: Your self-created and collected data—such as personal files and downloads—should always be backed up using a file backup. This is the standard data protection method with Langmeier Backup software. The operating system partition (C:) should be secured with an image backup, which is also referred to as a hard disk image backup in Langmeier Backup. For me, an image also makes sense for private use, not just for servers. For example, in the event of a serious virus attack or if a hard disk is defective.
To protect yourself from mirroring a virus attack, you can always create an image of a fresh installation with all the necessary application programs - i.e. before you let the computer onto the Internet. And then only make incremental images.
I think file backups and images simply serve different purposes and one is as important as the other. It's good when backup software can do both.
